Football Horserace

Choose a nation in a tournament: Denmark at the Euros, Morocco at the World Cup. Three rival nations race against you. Pick a stat you think your nation leads, like most goals in a single match or fewest goals conceded, and if you are right your flag moves one space. Pick wrong and the nation that really leads it moves instead.

How to play

  1. 1

Each day's race is one tournament and four nations, the same for everyone: choose yours, the other three are your rivals. You need five spaces, each rival needs three.

  2. 2

Pick a stat from the list or type one: wins, penalties, clean sheets, red cards, comebacks and more. Every stat is a real record of that tournament.

  3. 3

The nation that leads the stat moves one space, whoever picked it. A tie moves every nation that shares the lead.

  4. 4

Reach the goal before the rivals, in as few picks as you can. Five out of five is a perfect race.

Rules and details

Football Horserace is the stat race from the football shorts, made into a game you can play every day. Each player owns a nation and every pick is a question about the real records: does your nation lead this stat or not? The nation that leads it moves, so a wrong pick pushes a rival forward.

The stats come from open records of every international match: World Cup, Euros, Copa América, Africa Cup of Nations, Asian Cup, Gold Cup, World Cup and Euro qualifiers and the Nations League, from the first internationals to today. There are 69 kinds of stat in 10 tournaments, from goals and wins to penalties conceded, own goals and the oldest player, and each one can be looked at all-time or in a recent era. After every pick you see each nation's number and the match behind it.

A new race arrives every day at midnight Argentina time, with nations dealt so the race is even. Without an account you play the previous days; signed-in players get today's race and the daily leaderboard, where a win in fewer picks ranks higher.

With friends it is a real race. Open a room for 2 to 4 players and pick the tournament, or let it be random. You take turns choosing your nations, then every round everyone picks a stat at the same time, in secret. The picks are shown fastest first and each one moves its leader: the first flag across the line wins.
